Lawrence Hershfield, Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Hershfield co-founded Ranch Capital in 2002. Mr. Hershfield is responsible for the strategic direction of the firm, sourcing and analyzing prospective investments, and managing the firm on a day-to-day basis. Prior to co-founding Ranch, Mr. Hershfield worked for seventeen years at Leucadia National Corporation in positions of increasing responsibility, culminating as its Executive Vice President (one of two at the company) and President of Leucadia International. In addition to his extensive investment experience in distressed and bankrupt companies, Mr. Hershfield also ran three companies during his Leucadia career: BRAE Corporation (a railcar leasing company), Pepsi International Bottlers (a joint venture with PepsiCo that built and managed a soft drink bottling company in Russia), and Finova Group Inc., where after managing the Berkshire Hathaway – Leucadia joint venture that ultimately committed $6 billion to fund Finova’s bankruptcy reorganization, he assumed the CEO role at Finova upon its emergence from bankruptcy. Mr. Hershfield also has significant international experience, including three-and-a-half years in Russia, and serving as director of a Latin American utility company.
Mr. Hershfield has served as Chairman of the Board of Hawaiian Holdings and Hawaiian Airlines for 11 years. He is a Board Member of Berkadia, LLC and previously served as Chairman of the Board of Premier Entertainment Biloxi (owner of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, MS). He is also Chairman of the Board of 5D Robotics, Inc., a San Diego-based technology company focused on software and sensors for autonomous and connected industrial vehicles and automobiles.

Mr. Hershfield received his MBA from Stanford University in 1981 and B.S. from Bucknell University in 1977. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Stanford Center for Longevity, and previously served on the Board of the Stanford Business Trust (an advisor to the Graduate of Business School’s endowment). He is also co-founder and Board Member of Computers-2-San Diego Kids.

Sam Hartman, Vice President, Portfolio Investments

Mr. Hartman joined Ranch Capital in 2012. Mr. Hartman focuses on evaluation of potential investments as well as aiding operationally at Ranch’s portfolio companies. Prior to joining Ranch, Mr. Hartman was a Senior Associate at L.E.K. Consulting, where he performed due diligence for private equity transactions and participated in strategy engagements in both healthcare and media/entertainment.

Mr. Hartman graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Economics.

Sonia Chin, Corporate Controller

Ms. Chin joined Ranch Capital in 2015. Ms. Chin focuses on accounting, finance and aides operationally for Ranch’s portfolio companies. Prior to joining Ranch, Ms. Chin served five years at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) as the Assoc Vice President for Accounting & Budgeting where she led the new initiative’s business plans, enterprise software conversion for accounting, and managed a $100M operating budget. Prior to PLNU, Ms. Chin served eight years in various roles under the J.F. Shea companies, including Vice President of Finance for the San Diego division, for Shea Homes. In addition, Sonia served 4 years in public accounting (Arthur Andersen & Haskell & White) working in the Tax, Audit, and Business Consulting units.

Ms. Chin received her B.S. from USC’s Leventhal School in accounting and is a certified public accountant in the state of California.

Bill Jencks, Vice President of Real Estate

Mr. Jencks joined Ranch Capital in 2016. Mr. Jencks is responsible for managing activities in Real Estate acquisition, development, and operations for Ranch Capital and its affiliates. Prior to joining Ranch, Mr. Jencks worked for five years at Merlone Geier Partners (the largest private owner of retail real estate on the West Coast at the time) in varying roles culminating in a partnership interest as Director of Development, where he led the entitlement and development efforts for multiple large, mixed use development projects in excess of $200 million each including office, retail, entertainment, hotel, and residential uses. Mr. Jencks also has prior experience as a practicing architect and private real estate development consultant. He has been responsible for the design or development of over $1.5 billion of real estate.

Mr. Jencks is a licensed Architect and Real Estate Broker in the state of California, a LEED Accredited Professional and active member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He received his MBA and Bachelor’s of Architecture (BArch) from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Sveta Felsinger, Executive Assistant

Mrs. Felsinger joined Ranch Capital in 2002 after spending seven years with Leucadia National Corporation working in their Moscow, New York and later San Diego offices. Mrs. Felsinger has over 15 years of experience coordinating, planning and supporting daily operational and administrative functions.

Mrs. Felsinger provides comprehensive support for executive-level staff and is responsible for developing and managing the administrative operations of the company. She serves as a liaison between Ranch Capital and its external partners while managing the internal administrative staff of the company.

Mrs. Felsinger received a Master’s Degree from Moscow State Linguistic University.

Jon Rilling, Vice President

Mr. Rilling began his career in the architectural industry as a designer and project manager from 1995 through 2000, later joining HomeFed Corporation (HOFD) in 2000 as an assistant project manager for a 4,850 acre portion of Otay Ranch. Mr. Rilling was instrumental in the submittal of two General Plan Amendment Applications to the City of Chula Vista to increase its entitlements for Otay Valley from approximately 2,800 units to 6,300 units and over 1mm sf of commercial. While at HomeFed, Mr. Rilling worked on a management team to sell a combined total of 1,967 acres of Otay Ranch for $29.3mm, compared to the $19mm acquisition price of the entire 4,850 acre Otay Ranch purchase only 5 years prior.

Since 2005, Mr. Rilling has been responsible for managing the acquisition, planning and entitlement of the 1,746 unit, 90,000 sf mixed-use Lilac Hills Ranch Village. In 2015, Lilac Hills Ranch was recommended for approval by the County Department of Planning and Development Services and, subsequently, the County Planning Commission.

Mr. Rilling graduated from Hobart College in Geneva NY with a Liberal Arts Degree and has a Masters of Architecture from the New School of Architecture in San Diego. Mr. Rilling presently serves on the Valley Center Rotary Club and has been a BIA and ULI member for 16 years.

Jessica Sergi, Senior Accountant

Ms. Sergi joined Ranch Capital in 2016. Ms. Sergi’s primary focus is on the day to day operational accounting for multiple projects. Prior to relocating to San Diego from San Francisco, Ms. Sergi worked as a Senior Accountant for Redwood Trust, a mortgage REIT. She directed the company's accounts payable department, assisted with general ledger accounting, and various aspects of SEC reporting. Ms. Sergi also served as Environmental Chairman for the Redwood Employee foundation. She spent several years working at various law firms in Boston and San Francisco performing a variety of functions including billing, cash management, reconciliations, month-end close, and reporting.

Ms. Sergi has a B.S. in Business Administration from SUNY College at Brockport.

Ms. Warren joined Ranch Capital in October 2017 as a tax specialist. Janet focuses on income tax compliance and administration for Ranch’s many legal entities. Janet’s experience includes working in a CPA tax practice where she prepares and reviews tax returns for individuals, trusts, and businesses. Prior to her return to San Diego, she lived in the Boston area and worked as a Senior Tax Manager at Nuance Communications, Inc. where she was responsible for their worldwide income tax accounting and US federal and state income tax compliance. As a Senior Tax Manager in BDO Seidman USA, LLP’s Boston office, she audited public company income tax provisions and managed income tax reporting for a multinational medical devices client. Prior to moving to the east coast, she lived and worked in Silicon Valley and spent much of her career in the Sun Microsystems Corporate Tax Department where she managed global income tax accounting, US federal income tax compliance and IRS audits. Ms. Warren received a B.S. in Business from the San Diego State University School of Accountancy and is a certified public accountant in the state of California.
